Deck the Halls with Sensibility

Start by engaging your sense of color. I am a firm believer in building on what you already have. After all, you have created a room that you like, so build on your visual sense for your holiday decorating. Holiday color schemes have moved far beyond traditional reds and greens to include anything that shimmers and sparkles or enriches your current color scheme. Selecting holiday arrangements that complement your room’s overall look and feel will deck the room with spirit and elegance.

Bring the outdoors in. Greenery draped around the house, especially doorways, creates an inviting atmosphere and stimulates the sense of smell with a woods aroma. Strings of pinecones can be an alternative. And using white lights always works to bring the snowflake look indoors without the cold.

Simple accessorizing goes a long way. Modifying existing accessories allows for sensible, stress-reducing holiday touches. Do you normally have a pair of bowls on your dining room buffet? They can be perfect for holding a couple of small holiday trees. Do you normally have a small decorative lamp or two on display?  Consider changing the lampshades. And you don’t have to go with a red or green; it could be black shades that add drama while making the holiday items stand out more.

Keeping it simple, engaging your senses, and building on what you already have can make trimming the house for the holidays a more joyful, peaceful and relaxing time. Sing Fa la la la la.
