Ask a Decorator: Dining Room Table

Ask Decorating Den

Audrey asked Decorating Den:

“I moved into a house with a dining room that is 18ft long and 12ft wide with floor length windows/doors on each end.   The ceilings are 12ft.   2 questions: 1.  My table is 6.5ft X 4 ft with the leaf in the middle.  Is this size okay?  It looks really small in there.  2.  Ideas for chandelier.  I was thinking of doing 2 b/c the current one looks so giant in the center but am not sure where to begin.”

Decorating Den suggested:

It sounds like you have a beautiful dining room with plenty of light and open space! The size of the table is a critical decision and you need to ask yourself how many guests you’ll want to seat at the table, and how often. If you have a large family or frequently host sit down dinners you’ll want to take advantage of the size of your room and go for a larger table. Keep in mind that each person needs about 2 feet of space to eat comfortably. However, if you have a smaller family, or only use the room on a few occasions, I would focus on adding features to balance the room and table. In terms of measurements the rule of thumb is to leave 42-48” between your table and the wall or any furniture you may have to allow for easy flow around the room. In your case, where the large windows won’t allow for extra pieces, window treatments will be a critical element.

Beautifully designed drapery panels on either side of the windows or doors you’ve described, will add drama and refocus the room away from the table. Window treatments will also balance the size of your chandelier. Going for two fixtures would make a dramatic statement, but you might feel happy with the existing one once the window treatments are installed.

Good luck and enjoy!
