Home Organization Tips

closet organization

We’ve all heard several different approaches on how to get organized. There’s:

  • “If you haven’t used it in the last year get rid of it” theory,
  • “If you have more than one, purge”
  • “If it’s old and has no sentimental value, toss it”, or
  • The hanger trick for your closet, where you turn the hangers backwards and every time you wear an item, you hang it back up normally. At the end of the year, whatever is still backwards can be donated.

But in reality, everyone needs to take their own approach.

If you have the space, purging isn’t necessarily your only option, particularly if you’re sentimental. Ask yourself these questions:

  • “Do I have the space for this?”
  • “Do I have unnecessary duplicates?” and
  • “Is this item worth my home being cluttered”.

For your living space to work well, everything must have a home or designated spot without interfering with the functionality, comfort and design of your home.

Getting organized is no easy task. First, you must invest a chunk of time to the initial process, and afterwards, small amounts of time daily or weekly must be allocated to maintain the changes you’ve made.

Large shelving units, filing cabinets and creative storage pieces are key to keeping your home organized while maintaining your design aesthetic. Ottomans and benches with extra storage are great for hiding items that need to be easily accessed. Organizational tools such as boxes and crates come in so many different colors, patterns and materials that they can be implemented in any home to match any style. A trip to the container store, or even a google search for “organizing my kitchen” (or bedroom or bathroom, etc.) can open your eyes to an array of helpful tools.

Once you get organized, your home will feel like yours again when you’re not swimming through your clutter!
