Decorating a nursery or child’s room is an exciting time in any parent’s life; however, as that child grows up, the same themes that were cute back then no longer suit the new style and personality of the emerging teenager.

That’s the challenge we faced when it came to designing a bedroom for a 16-year-old girl in Westchester. A juvenile room needed to be updated to reflect the teen’s fresh, sophisticated vibe.

The original nursery featured wall-to-wall carpeting, a yellow color scheme, and Noah’s Ark decor. The carpets were removed and we had hardwood floors installed. We brought in furniture with a refined look, including an upholstered headboard. We painted the room modern, funky colors, which we also incorporated into an area rug that we had custom made. Crystal chandeliers were installed as the icing on the cake to complete the sophisticated feel.

The nursery did not accommodate for the wide assortment of items that teenagers accumulate, so a major part of the redesign of the bedroom focused on organization. We brought in a bed with built-in drawers beneath to allow for out-of-sight storage.

It was also important to showcase the teen’s interests. so shelves were installed to display the teen’s extensive candle collection.

Since the bedroom is where the teen spends a lot of time entertaining friends, we brought in a loveseat to make it comfortable for a group of girls to hang out, chat, and listen to music.

The completed room gave the teenager a functional, sophisticated space she could be proud to entertain in.
