Living in Comfort

0901a1-13Now that we’re into mid-January and the buzz of New Year’s resolutions and the virtues of organizing have begun to fade, I like to think about comfort. Save your good intentions for spring when you can really move around and shake things up. Now is the time to get warm, cozy and enjoy the comforts of your home.

The key component of a comfortable home is cushioning. Whether it’s pillows, upholstery, or even window treatments, fabrics soften a home and cushion you from the elements. Using a variety of fabrics can add texture to your interior design and create warmth in any color scheme. Chenille, velvets, linens, and silks work in casual and formal settings today, and layering textures will provide interest as well as warmth.

1110a1-13Window treatments are an excellent way to buffer your room from the cold. Typically a two-layer approach works best. The first layer is the functional component, the shade or blind that can be opened or closed when needed. The second layer is the decorative component that is often fixed on the window, but can be designed to move. Today’s trend of two side-panel treatments can be created to open and
close, while with enough fabric, can cover windows of any width. Full and richly textured window treatments can be a significant barrier against heat loss while at the same time adding an element of beauty.

0911o2-13Adding upholstered furniture softens and adds comfort to any space. Choose textured fabrics that appeal to the sense of touch. Today’s chenille is incredibly durable and stain resistant. A side chair covered in an irresistibly soft fabric such as this can entice anyone to take a break and enjoy life at home.

Throw pillows provide another opportunity to up the fabric quotient in a room. Often thought of as a decorative element, throw pillows with a down filling can become the most sought after piece in the room. Larger floor pillows can also add versatile seating when more want to join together.

0922o2-13Attention to fabrics will make any home more comfortable to body and soul. Make a few changes these winter months and see for yourself, you may hope winter goes on forever!
