Ottomans of Every Form and Function at Market

Ottomans showed beautifully and frequently at the Home Furnishings Market this fall. They’re a much loved item for designers with good reason. They provide form and function, style and substance. With so many to choose from, it can be difficult to decide on the right one.  The key elements to keep in mind are: function, style, size, fabric, color, and construction.

Function: In recent years ottomans have become more versatile. Many offer storage while others have broad flat surfaces to serve as a coffee or side table. Some have wheels to give added flexibility and many are used as extra seating. There is no doubt the ottoman has become the workhorse of the living, family, or play room.  Knowing what your needs are will narrow your choices up front.

Style: No longer just a place to rest your feet, ottomans have become a design focal point. Rectangular or square shapes tend toward traditional, and round can add a more modern element. Leg styling is important to consider as well. More traditional ottomans have legs covered with fabric and are a shapely style which can add an element of interest to a traditional room. Modern styles often show straight or no legs with the ottoman flat to the ground.

Fabric: Remember, ottomans get a lot of use. With any frequently used piece, it’s important to consider stain resistant fabrics. Slipcovers for easy cleaning are always an option. And leather, while a durable choice, will show signs of use as it ages.

Color: It will be important to decide whether you want the ottoman to add drama or style with prints or patterns, or to go the more traditional route with color and texture matching your sofa and loveseat.

Construction: An ottoman should always be sturdy. With legs, coffee trays, books, children and pets making their way on and off the ottoman, its strength is its value. Be sure to take the time to examine craftsmanship and have a look underneath to ensure joints are sturdy and well-constructed.
