Proportion In Home Design

proportion

In the world of interior design, there is one word that you should always keep in mind – proportion.

Proportion refers to the balance of design elements in a room, including space, shape, color and texture. In order to achieve proper proportions in a home, these elements should be repeated in a way that is visually stimulating. This all might sound a bit confusing – read on for a clear explanation of how proportion is used when properly designing a home.

shape sizeSpace. When proportioning the space in a room, make sure that furniture and accessories are generally the same size. Similarly, be sure that furnishings surrounding statement pieces are not overwhelmingly larger or smaller. For instance, if you want the focus of the room to be on a vintage table, try to keep the surrounding furnishings the same size as the table. If they are too large, they will take away from the statement piece; if they are too small, the proportion of the space will appear off.

Shape. Maintaining a consistency of similar shapes in a room allows for visual harmony. For example, if you have a rectangular couch, try hanging rectangular décor or accessorizing with square pillows. There is wiggle room when it comes to playing with shape. If you wanted to include an oval table rather than a rectangular one, it could work, provided that the coffee table is proportionate to the couch in length.

golden meanColor. When considering how color will be used in a room, always abide by the Golden Ratio – 10:30:60. Use your wall art or furniture patterns as a guideline, and distribute one of those colors to 60% of the room, another to 30%, and a third shade to 10%. By applying the Golden Ratio, it will be easier to evenly distribute color to furnishings and ensure equal proportion of color in a space.

textureTexture. Adding texture to a space increases the richness, interest, and balance the room evokes. If you have an established color scheme in a room, add in a piece with texture. For instance, if your bedroom evokes a contemporary style or has a monochromatic color scheme, incorporate a piece finished in wood grain to add richness and depth to the décor.

By following these simple tips, you can design your home in a style is pleasing to the eye. For more information on properly using proportion in your home, give me a call and schedule your free in-home design consultation!
