Holiday Decorating Do’s & Don’ts

Decorating your home for the holidays can often seem like a daunting task. After all, your holiday schedule is probably packed with plenty of things to do already from shopping for gifts to sending cards and finalizing the guest list for your holiday party. It’s often easy to forget about decorating your home until it’s too late. This year make your holiday season a little less stressful with these simple holiday decorating tips.

  • Don’t ignore the classics. Just about everyone has warm childhood memories of the holiday season. Trees, stockings, wreaths, lights, and tinsel are all decorating staples for a reason—everyone loves them when they’re done right. The holidays aren’t the time to be too modern. Instead, let your house be inspired by the past with oversized multi-colored lights, red stockings inscribed with names of family members, and classic wreath displays on the front door.
  • Do inject your personal style into holiday decor. While it’s true that the classics always work best, that doesn’t mean you’re forbidden from getting a little creative. You’re allowed to let your personality influence your home’s holiday decorations. Homes come in all shapes and sizes, and so can your decorations. Personalize your home with decorations that express your own unique style and interests.
  • Don’t overdo it. Less is often more when it comes to seasonal decor. Stick with simple decorations if you want to save time and money. Instead of a jumble of bulky holiday craft projects, try something basic, like placing your favorite ornaments inside glass jars of varying heights for an artful decorative accent. Similarly, your decor should be spread throughout your home instead of centralized in one space, as this can quickly become overwhelming!
  • Do think outside the (gift) box. There’s no doubt that red and green is a classic holiday color combination, but you don’t have to limit yourself to these traditional color schemes. Instead, experiment with other hues like gold, pink, and navy blue for ornaments, wrapping paper, and wreaths to add a modern twist to old traditions.
  • Don’t forget to diversify. Christmas decorating doesn’t have to completely revolve around Santa Claus. Religious and winter seasonal characters or elements can bring an extra dimension to your holiday decor scheme. Often overlooked characters such as Jack Frost or Frosty the Snowman can help you avoid overkill of Old Saint Nick. If fictional characters aren’t your cup of tea, try including some furry friends. Polar bears and penguins are cute alternatives to traditional Christmas characters.
  • Do recognize seasonal limits. You don’t want to be the one in the neighborhood with lights up on St. Patrick’s Day. You should dispose of your tree properly and pack away decorations carefully within a reasonable time period. Be sure to capture your creations on camera and use them for inspiration next year!
